This lounge chair's backrest grows from the cushion like a reindeer's antlers. The antlers are made by laminating thin sheets of veneer. Most veneers are created from 1mm sheets of wood whose grain is alternated by degrees with each layer. To increase the strength of the stand-alone backrest, we laminated 18 sheets of 0.6 mm wood at a variance of 6 degrees each, for total variance of 90 degrees. This construction produced a veneer of unusual strength, appropriate for a backrest, and a fine, beautiful finish to the end grain.
