The “zerogra” is a feature product of Megane-Ichiba, a major eyewear retail shop that has over 900 stores across Japan. Moulded from curved thin titanium plates and with no hinges on either side, the eyeglasses are lightweight and offer superb wearability. We decided to come up with a new design that would evolve the zerogra even further. Due to the single-body construction of the previous model, the frame could not be folded inwards and the eyeglasses and case were too bulky. To improve this, we opted for a reverse-hinge structure that enabled the frame to naturally fold inwards. However merely turning it into a reverse-hinge structure would result in a stress concentration on a singular point, and the frame would not meet the strength standard set by the company, which is to endure 20,000 repetitions of opening and closing. Therefore we solved the problem by creating two slits around the reverse-hinge structure, which enable the load to be evenly distributed over the entire frame. As a result, we were able to achieve a design that would stay small and compact when not in use, and also enhance its wearability while maintaining a high level of strength.
